Overview

Thanlyin is a major port city of Myanmar, situated on the Bago River from Yangon city. Thanlyin Township consists of 17 towns and 28 villages. Thanlyin has the largest port in the country, Thilawa port.

Thanlyin is a very pleasant place because of the roads with shady trees and the bustling markets. However, there are still ancient parts of the city in the past that visitors can visit.

Thanlyin was also the first place in Myanmar to receive the Christians and have the first church. You can visit the ruins of the church built by the Portuguese in 1750. Yele Paya located about 12km southeast of the Thanlyin is a sparkling floating pagoda. Here, you can feed fish around the edges of the temple. Kyaik-khauk Paya is considered the low-level Shwedagon Pagoda. You will have great views thanks to the hilltop location of the temple.

The 3rd week from January, the Hindu at Thanlyin will celebrate Thaipusam ceremony, repentance ceremony. Participants will repent of their wrongdoing by thrusting nails and passing through hot coal.
