Accommodation: Pakse hotel

Day 2: Bolaven Plateau

Discover a few of the impressive waterfalls on the fertile Bolaven Plateau – Laos’ premier coffee-growing region. During colonial times the Bolaven Plateau was populated by French settlers who were attracted to the cooler climate and fertile soils which created ideal coffee-growing conditions. Today, Lao coffee beans fetch some of the highest prices in the world, and are a source of income for the hilltribes living on the plateau. Visit a small-scale Fair Trade organic coffee farm to sample a freshly brewed Arabica and Robusta coffee. Situated in a forest-setting, Tad Lo Lodge is nestled next to a stream and small waterfall where you may get a glimpse of a small herd of elephants bathing.

We drove from Pakse to Ban Nakasan to get a local community boat. The Mekong is about 20km wide here and populated with lots a low lying islands of varying shapes and sizes. You pass very noisy trees with thousands of cicadas. We stopped on Don Khon (linked to Don Det by footbridge) island and travelled down the old/unused railway track to the end of the island where we got another boat to see the Irrwaddy dolpins which we saw and heard breathing. This is a quiet island compared to some (Don Det) as they are few backpackers. Dont forget to see the Lippi Falls
